Concrete Slab Fine & Coarse Aggregate Strata

Structural concrete aggregate proportioning comparing sharp sand with crushed gravel stones.

GRAVEL (COARSE AGGREGATE) FINE SAND AGGREGATE AGGREGATE RATIOS • M15 (1:2:4) -> 2 Sand : 4 Gravel • M20 (1:1.5:3) -> 1.5 Sand : 3 Gravel • Sand : Gravel Ratio ≈ 1 : 2 • Combined Density ≈ 2,200 kg/m³

Coarse-to-Fine Ratio

Standard structural concrete ratio where gravel is double the sand volume.

Gravel Volume = Sand Volume × 2.0 (in 1:2:4 / 1:1.5:3 mixes)

Combined Aggregate Mass

Calculates dry batch weight of sand and gravel for batch plants.

Combined Tonnage = (Sand m³ × 1.6) + (Gravel m³ × 1.65)

Concrete Slab Dry Factor

Dry bulk material expansion multiplier for concrete batching.

Total Dry Vol = Slab Wet Volume × 1.54

Why Sand and Gravel are Combined in Concrete

In concrete mixing, sand (fine aggregate) fills the voids between the larger gravel (coarse aggregate) stones, while cement paste glues the matrix together. The standard rule of thumb for dry volume expansion is multiplying the wet slab volume by 1.54.
