When water is added to dry materials, the volume decreases due to compaction. To find the required dry material volume, we multiply the wet volume by a standard factor.
* 1.54 is the standard factor for concrete. For mortar, 1.33 is often used.
Sand density varies based on moisture content and compaction. We use a standard baseline for dry, loose sand to convert cubic meters to tonnes.
* Assumes standard dry sand density of 1600 kg/m³ (2,698 lbs/yd³).
For a standard concrete mix ratio (Cement : Sand : Aggregate), the volume of sand is calculated by dividing its portion by the total parts.
Example M15 (1:2:4): Sand = Dry Vol × (2 / 7)
Mortar volume is calculated by subtracting the volume of the bare bricks from the total wall volume (which includes joints).
* Standard joint thickness is assumed to be 10mm.
Standard contractor volumetric conversions for bulk aggregate haulage, lorry supply, and South Asian brass units.
* 1 Brass = 100 Cu. Ft. = 2.83 m³ ≈ 4.5 tonnes dry sand.
In-situ compacted ground expands into loose volume when excavated due to air void introduction, requiring swell adjustment for haulage.
* Dry sand has a 10–15% swell factor; wet sand has 20–25%.
Bag count is derived from paver surface area, joint depth, joint width, and paver unit dimensions.
* Standard 50 lb bag covers 65–85 sq ft with narrow joints (1/8").

* Add 15% allowance for raked joint keying and rebound loss.

Everything you need to know about sand estimation, mix ratios, weights, and ordering logistics.
To calculate sand volume, multiply Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324 to get Cubic Yards. For metric measurements, multiply Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m) for Cubic Meters (m³). To convert cubic yards to weight, multiply by 1.35 tons/yd³ for dry sand or 1.62 tons/yd³ for wet sand. Always add a 10–15% waste and compaction factor for paver bases and excavation backfill.
When dry cement, sand, and water are mixed, the ultra-fine cement particles dissolve and fill the microscopic void spaces between sand granules, causing the total wet volume to shrink by approximately 25% to 35%. To yield 1 m³ of wet cured mortar, you need 1.33 m³ of dry materials (dry factor 1.33). For structural concrete containing gravel, you need 1.54 m³ of dry constituents (dry factor 1.54).
One cubic yard (27 cubic feet) of standard dry construction sand weighs approximately 2,700 lbs (1.35 US Short Tons or 1.22 Metric Tonnes). Damp or saturated wet sand weighs up to 3,240 lbs (1.62 US Tons) due to moisture surface tension. Bulk delivery tipper trucks typically haul between 10 to 18 tons per trip.
There are approximately 54 bags (50 lbs each) in 1 cubic yard of dry sand (2,700 lbs ÷ 50 lbs = 54 bags). There are exactly 40 bags (50 lbs each) in 1 US ton (2,000 lbs), and 44 bags in 1 metric tonne (2,204.6 lbs). For small projects under 15 bags, purchasing pre-bagged sand is convenient; for larger jobs over 1 yard, bulk delivery is significantly more cost-effective.
Selecting the correct aggregate gradation is crucial for structural performance:
• Concrete Slabs & Screed: Coarse sharp sand (ASTM C33) with angular particles for interlocking strength.
• Brick & Block Masonry: Fine masonry sand (ASTM C144) for smooth, spreadable mortar joints.
• Wall Plastering: Washed fine plaster sand for 12mm scratch and 3mm skim render.
• Paver Bedding & Joints: 1-inch sharp concrete sand bed + polymeric resin sand for weed-resistant joints.
• Pool Filters: #20 silica sand (0.45–0.55mm particle size).
In South Asian civil engineering markets, sand is sold by the Brass, where 1 Brass = 100 Cubic Feet (CFT) = 2.8317 m³ ≈ 4.5 metric tonnes. To convert:
• CFT to m³: Divide CFT by 35.315.
• m³ to CFT: Multiply m³ by 35.315.
• Cubic Yards to CFT: Multiply cubic yards by 27.
